Deadly Cloudburst Ravages Kashmir’s Kishtwar District, Dozens Killed

A sudden and powerful cloudburst tore through Chositi village in Kishtwar district, Indian-administered Kashmir, on Friday, killing at least 46 people and leaving over 100 injured. Authorities fear the death toll could climb further as rescue workers search for those still missing.

The disaster struck roughly 290 kilometers southeast of Srinagar, unleashing flash floods that swept away homes, shops, a community kitchen, a security checkpoint, and multiple vehicles. The deluge came with little warning, overwhelming the remote mountain community.

Rescue Operations Underway

Police, the Indian Army, and teams from both the National and State Disaster Response Forces have been working through debris and treacherous terrain to evacuate residents. Around 200 people have been moved to safety so far. A major Hindu pilgrimage in the nearby mountains has been suspended until conditions stabilize.

Photographs from the area reveal a scene of devastation—collapsed buildings, injured survivors receiving medical aid, and rows of bodies wrapped in shrouds awaiting burial.

Government Response and Weather Warnings

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has promised full assistance for those affected, saying the central government is monitoring the situation closely. The India Meteorological Department had issued prior alerts for heavy rainfall, landslides, and potential cloudbursts, a reminder of the region’s vulnerability during the monsoon season.

Pakistan Offers Condolences

In Islamabad, Pakistan’s Foreign Office expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy. A spokesperson conveyed condolences to the bereaved families and wished a swift recovery for the injured. The statement reaffirmed Pakistan’s solidarity with the people of Kashmir, noting their resilience in the face of repeated hardships.

Cloudbursts—sudden, intense downpours over a small area—are not uncommon in the Himalayan region, but their impact can be catastrophic due to steep terrain, fragile infrastructure, and limited escape routes.
