Islamabad to Launch Free Public Wi-Fi at 30 Key Spots

Residents of Islamabad will soon have access to free internet across major public spaces, as the Capital Development Authority (CDA) moves forward with an ambitious plan to transform the city into a fully connected “Free Wi-Fi City.”

The initiative, approved in a high-level meeting led by CDA Chairman Muhammad Ali Randhawa, will roll out in phases, starting with 30 priority locations.

First Phase: Buses, Parks, and Public Hubs

In the initial rollout, free Wi-Fi will be installed at metro and feeder bus stations, as well as public parks and other high-traffic areas. Officials say the goal is to make connectivity accessible to commuters, students, and families on the go, positioning Islamabad as one of Pakistan’s most digitally advanced cities.

Partnership with NTC for Setup and Maintenance

To get the network running, CDA’s technical team will support the National Telecommunication Corporation (NTC) in setting up the infrastructure. However, NTC will take full responsibility for operating and maintaining the system once it’s live, ensuring that the service remains smooth and secure.

Revenue Plan to Keep Service Running

Recognizing the challenge of sustaining free services, CDA is working on a revenue model that could involve digital marketing or advertising to cover maintenance and upgrades. Chairman Randhawa stressed that any income generated would go back into improving the system rather than becoming a profit stream.

Islamabad’s Push Toward Smart City Status

The Wi-Fi rollout is part of a broader push to modernize Islamabad’s digital infrastructure. “We’re taking steps to turn Islamabad into a fully connected, smart city,” Randhawa said, highlighting plans for further technology-driven initiatives in the future.

If successful, Islamabad would join a growing list of cities worldwide offering free public internet, a move expected to benefit students, tourists, and remote workers while promoting digital inclusion.
