Google is bringing lightweight video editing directly into Google Drive through a new integration with Google Vids, its browser-based editing app. Over the next two weeks, select Google Workspace users will start seeing the feature, making it possible to trim and edit videos without leaving Drive.
A Seamless Editing Option for Quick Projects
Once the rollout reaches your account, opening a supported video file in Drive will display a purple Google Vids button in the top-right corner. Clicking it launches the clip in Google Vids, where you’ll have access to simple but useful tools: trimming sections, adding text overlays, inserting music, and layering graphics.
Google isn’t pitching this as a professional-grade editing suite—it’s designed for speed and accessibility. Projects are saved as new Google Vids files, so you won’t overwrite your original footage, though this also means true in-place editing isn’t here yet.
File Type and Size Restrictions
The integration supports MP4, QuickTime, OGG, and WebM files, but there are limits: videos must be under 35 minutes and 4GB in size. For now, this keeps the feature squarely in the “quick edit” category rather than a full-scale production tool.
Who Gets Access First
The feature is rolling out exclusively to a range of Workspace subscription tiers, including:
- Business Starter, Standard, and Plus
- Enterprise Starter, Standard, and Plus
- Essentials and Enterprise Essentials (including Plus)
- Nonprofits
- Gemini Education (Standard and Premium)
- Google AI Pro and Ultra
- Gemini Business and Enterprise add-on customers
This means the bulk of professional and educational users will get access, while free Google accounts are left out for now.
Why It Matters
This move reflects Google’s broader strategy of making Drive a true content hub, reducing reliance on third-party or installed software. While Google Vids won’t replace Adobe Premiere or Final Cut anytime soon, its simplicity could make it appealing for marketing teams, educators, and small businesses looking to create quick edits without extra tools.
