Islamabad Cracks Down on Heavy Vehicles to Ease Traffic Jams

In a decisive move to improve the flow of traffic and enhance road safety, Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP) has imposed a ban on heavy vehicles, including overloaded trucks and loader rickshaws, from entering the city. The directive, announced by Chief Traffic Officer Captain (retd) Syed Zeeshan Haider on Thursday, targets the root causes of frequent congestion and serious accidents involving these large vehicles.

To enforce this restriction effectively, additional traffic officers have been deployed at crucial roadways and intersections throughout Islamabad. Those caught violating the ban face stern penalties—vehicles can be seized, and offenders will be subject to legal action, underscoring the zero-tolerance stance of the ITP.

Captain Haider emphasized that this crackdown is part of a broader campaign against all forms of traffic violations. Overspeeding, jumping red lights, improper lane changes, and illegal parking will be met with fines and, when warranted, vehicle impoundment.

In a bid to modernize enforcement, the traffic police are also ramping up the use of drone surveillance. This technological upgrade will enable real-time monitoring of traffic offenses, allowing faster response and better management of Islamabad’s roadways.

This initiative reflects growing concerns about road safety and congestion in the capital, where heavy vehicles have long been a challenge to smooth traffic movement. The ITP’s strategy could serve as a model for other cities grappling with similar issues.
