Pakistan’s Major Reservoirs Now Hold 11.7 MAF of Water, Says WAPDA

The Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) has released updated figures on river flows and reservoir storage, showing a combined water stock of 11.7 million acre-feet (MAF) across the country’s key dams.

According to WAPDA’s latest data, the Indus River at Tarbela is receiving an inflow of 186,100 cusecs, while Mangla Dam on the Jhelum is recording 43,300 cusecs. Further downstream, inflows at Chashma Barrage have surged to 252,200 cusecs, and Head Marala on the Chenab is seeing 191,900 cusecs. The Kabul River at Nowshera stands at 33,400 cusecs.

In terms of reservoir storage, Tarbela currently holds 5.728 MAF, while Mangla is at 5.782 MAF. The Chashma reservoir contains 0.212 MAF, bringing the total storage across the three facilities to 11.722 MAF.

The figures suggest healthy river inflows as the monsoon season progresses, providing a much-needed boost to irrigation and hydropower generation. However, experts warn that careful water management will remain crucial in the coming weeks to avoid downstream flooding risks and ensure steady supply for agriculture.
