In response to ongoing flood emergencies, the Punjab Education Department has authorized deputy commissioners across the province to decide on temporary school closures in areas severely affected by waterlogging.
This decentralized approach allows local authorities to tailor school schedules according to the severity of flooding in their districts. For instance, in Kot Momin tehsil of Sargodha, schools have already been closed for a week and are expected to reopen on September 2, as water levels continue to disrupt normal operations.
Colleges Also Affected Across Lahore Division
Flood-related disruptions are not limited to schools. Several colleges in the Lahore division have temporarily shut their doors, with the Director of Colleges confirming closures in 16 institutions. In Nankana Sahib, schools in Mandi Faizabad and Syedwala will remain closed for two days, while colleges in Kanganpur, Kasur, are also observing brief holidays.
The provincial government stressed that these closures aim not only to protect students and staff but also to provide relief to families displaced by the floods, many of whom are seeking temporary shelter in educational facilities.
Exams Postponed as Flood Crisis Deepens
The Punjab Public Service Commission (PPSC) has also responded to the emergency. Chairman Muhammad Abdul Aziz announced that all written exams scheduled for August 30 and 31 have been postponed. The decision reflects the government’s focus on safety and the practical challenges faced by candidates in flood-affected regions.
Experts say these adaptive measures highlight the growing need for local authorities to have flexible control over education schedules during natural disasters, ensuring both safety and continuity wherever possible.
